April 2009 |
Editorial:
Finally
... a newsletter! Sorry but we have had
a hectic first ¼ of the year and never got around to it until now ...
We are all
aware of the slowdown in the global economy and have felt the spin-off here in
SA. The negativity surrounding us does
more damage in itself than the actual reality of the situation. Now more than ever, we need to focus
pro-actively on solutions to achieve positive results. Some of our crew have decided that they will
not charge premium days on bank holidays (excluding Christmas, New Year and
Sundays). The reasoning behind this was
that they would rather work than not and April is historically such a bad month
as producers don't schedule to shoot on public holidays. This gesture been very favourably met by
members of the CPA who have promised to give our crew who will do the same,
preference. Working together is so much
more productive than working against each other.
A
freelancer's business is a means through which they exchange value to other
people and in return, make money. That
value includes skills, both technically and social. The better the experience for both the
freelance and their employer, the more likely it will be to generate more
work. We, as crew agents, are obliged to
make sure that our crew are given positive exposure to each and every
production company without prejudice or favouritism. The final decision on who does the job is
always with the production company. Cash
is the by-product of exchanging value, so if we never lose focus of the value
we exchange - the cash will flow.
Speaking
of which, here is how we're working together at CallaCrew to ensure that our
crew and the production companies get a better service. The different
departments mean that we are not running around trying to do everything or
giving too little time to the important things.
Sandi and I handle commercial bookings, Mandy handles long-form. Kim and Leila assist us by doing our admin
and ensuring that your messages and diaries get to you, CV's are updated, and
all the other stuff that allows us to focus on bookings. Daleen handles invoicing and Cynthia -
payments. The girls work extremely hard
for you and are committed to your best interests. We are always open to listening to your
queries, complaints and suggestions, talk to us! Our business is about communication.
So let's
get positive - your reality is confirmed by what you focus your thoughts on,
focus on solutions and you'll get positive results regardless of how tough the
going gets!

AFTERHOURS
We have until now, attempted to
operate a 24/7 afterhours line, but this has been seriously abused with random
calls coming through at all hours of the early morning. In most instances we
are unable to assist as it involves a crew member who hasn't arrived on time
and it would be inappropriate to phone around for other crew at that time of
day. After careful consideration we have
taken a decision to operate the afterhours line until 9.00pm daily and from
6.30am. Please make a note of this.
